Chapter 10
Nadia hesitated at the door of Drew and Ariaâs office, looking down at Charlotte, who clung to her hand, her rabbit tucked under her arm.
They were in town to visit the nursery and look at the plants the twins had already scouted out. They also intended to give Drew a chance to spend some more time with his daughter during the day.
Yesterday, while Charlotte napped, Nadia had gone through Lilyâs exercises with her. While Charlotte was awake, Lilyâs friend, Lorna McLure had picked her up for an afternoon away from the house.
Nadia was thankful for the break, as it gave her a chance to spend one on one time with Charlotte without feeling torn between doing what she was paid to do, which was take care of Lily, and doing what she wanted to do, which was play with Charlotte.
Drew had come home for lunch to be with his daughter. He read her a couple of stories and tried to play with some blocks with her. She engaged for a little while but then sought out Nadia. Nadia had felt bad for Drew, but they both surmised that she was missing her mother and wasnât used to having a man in her life. They both knew it would be a while before Charlotte accepted Drew and grew accustomed to her new life.
Poor munchkin.
Now she would probably be overwhelmed by attention once they stepped inside Drewâs office. Lily hadnât wanted to stay in the car with Charlotte while Nadia went inside to fetch Drew. She was itching to get to the Grill and Chill so that she could chat up some people there.
Nadia also guessed that Lily still wasnât too keen on being with Charlotte one on one. Lily seemed to do little more than tolerate the little girl. Nadia would have liked to call her out on it, but she didnât feel it was her place. After all, Charlotte wasnât her daughter, and Lily wasnât her mother.
But Lilyâs reluctance meant that Nadia now had to take Charlotte with her into Drewâs office.
She pushed open the door and stepped inside.
Louisa looked up from behind the reception desk, smiling politely. Her expression shifted as she recognized Nadia. Then her eyes widened when she saw Charlotte.
She looked like she was about to stand up, and Nadiaâs hand tightened protectively around Charlotteâs hand. She hoped that Louisa would be discreet. Thankfully, Louisa could read the room and sat down again. Instead, she smiled at the little girl. âHello, Charlotte, welcome toâ¦your dadâsâ¦office.â
It seemed Louisa was also getting used to the idea of Drew having a child.
Charlotte leaned closer to Nadia, turning her head against her leg.
âSheâs rather overwhelmed right now,â Nadia explained, bending over to pick the child up and give her a quick cuddle.
âNo doubt. Poor kiddo.â Louisa shook her head. âIâm sure Drew is feeling the pinch as well.â
âIâm sure he is,â was all Nadia said. She didnât want to say too much in front of Charlotte. Though the girl was only two years old, Nadia wasnât sure what that little mind understood or processed.
